Venezia  v Genoa Cricket 1893

31st of May, 2009.

Without doubt, the most out-standing show of character and ability in Genoa Cricket’s short, but ever-more illustrious history!  The team fought back against all the odds to record an amazing victory from the jaws of defeat and, simultaneously, go top of the league.

After a tiring coach trip to distant Venezia, the team arrived to the sickening sight of a poorly-prepared, pot-holed and uneven pitch, exactly as they had seen a year before.  Both Coach and Captain protested immediately, asking for an artificial pitch to be laid  to avoid the injuries sustained in 2008.  Bizarrely, the Venetians refused to act and insisted on playing on their uneven and unfair pitch.  The umpire was forced to accept the situation since the Italian Cricket Federation had previously endorsed their ground as safe to play on (presumably not the day after a discus competion had bombarded the grass, as was the case on Sunday).

Faced with abandoning the game and losing the points, Genoa Cricket had no choice but to play .

Predictably, the uncetain bounce led to the elimination of the heart of our team with Genoa on a disatrous 35 for 7 after an hour of play.  The last straw was another wild ball striking a batsman full in the visor of his helmet. At this point Genoa considered abandoning the game before a player might take a hit in the throat.

With telephone calls to the Federation, Genoa players leaving the field of play and the umpire unable to demand a change in the playing conditions, the choice was stark. Play on and inevitably lose or leave and lose the points anyway…….or stage the most daring comeback immaginable!!

Sri Lankans Kalou and Madoupa returned to the battle to face the attack and, with style, skill and perseverance amassed an incredible 85 runs between them.  Italian Enrico then stepped in to help ensure the most respectable of scores; 137.

It was then the turn of our bowlers to wrestle victory from what, such a short time before, had seemed like certain defeat.  Slowly but surely the wickets began to fall thanks to calm-heads, accurate bowling and good fielding. Niranga, Pethum, Nuwan, Madoupa and Charitha all bowled well to ensure the Venetian run-rate remained low.  One by one, Venetian wickets fell and victory seemed ever more possible.

As the bells of a nearby church rang aloud, their last man was out for 108.  Genoa Cricket celebrated wildly.  Long hours of travel and play, interspersed by a potential player walk-off under dangerous conditions, ended in a victory no-one could ever have hoped for.  Genoa took first place in the league and today’s result may have even more significance on the overall season of 2009, a year which looks set to be Genoa Cricket’s finest yet.
